Learning Goal:  Recognize that the lesson a character learns can often be stated as a theme.
Often, understanding how a character develops will help the reader understand the theme.
As is written in our red Reader’s Handbook… As you read you’ll want to be aware of the differences between static and dynamic characters.  Static characters stay the same throughout the story.  They hardly change at all.  In contrast, dynamic characters change from beginning to end.  They often learn something.  That change is something the author expects you as a reader to recognize and interpret.  Ask yourself what the author is suggesting by those changes.
Since change may be a real clue to the theme of a novel, describe here one change you see in the main character so far.
1.       Find one passage that shows a change in the character.
2.       Copy it down.
3.       Tell us the page number.
4.       Then, explain how this passage shows a change in the character.
      5.  Read all of the imforation above to help you answer the four questions.

      6.  Read your classmates' comments.  Learn from them.  Respond to their comments in some way.
support each other's understanding of character development. Talk about it!

  1. Before he had time to think again he pushed him self off into a sprint recklessly streaking across the grass. He didn't even stop to hide at any trees. He ran right into the sports family's door and tugged at the screen. But it was locked. page 55 last paragraph.
This passage is explaning that Luke is trying different stuff because he wouldn't do that before.

  4. I Agree with Garrett that after Luke discovers the 3rd child living in the sports house he is different. I think by risking his life going to visit jen and he is learning all new stuff from jen. Also he thinks she is lucky by watching out the window and TV and secretly visting the city.
